I had to smile at myself after I realized that I had unconsciously written this piece whilst following those two (almost) parallel rail lines north from Seattle to Vancouver. I have loved train journeys since I was a very young child and look for the excuse to take them wherever I can, particularly in Europe, where, looking up from writing or reading, the passing intimacies of back gardens, city roofs, arches, families at dinner, churchyard and vineyard, spire and mountain top cause constant intrigue.
