WE SHALL NOT BE HERE Heaven has been promised in great detail. Beyond this silence we shall not be here to find it. And that, my friend is a great joy. -from Fire in the Earth

My beloved dog Cleo of 14 1/2 years passed less than a week ago. I have been deep in the Well of Grief... now wondering what "doggy heaven" must feel like. Surely part of her spirit remains here, in my heart! <3
Heaven, we yearn for it in some distant far-off, forever place ... perhaps never more so than now, when so many part of the the world feel hellish. Could this split between present hell and the promise of future heaven be part of the problem? I'm reminded of some words from the late great Barry Lopez: "Eden is a conversation. It is the conversation of the human with the Divine. And it is the reverberations of that conversation that create a sense of place. It is not a thing, Eden, but a pattern of relationships, made visible in conversation. To live in Eden is to live in the midst of good relations, of just relations scrupulously attended to, imaginatively maintained through time. Altogether we call this beauty." Across all his writing about people and the natural world Lopez re-visioned this notion of heaven into a sense of 'present possibility'. It is a possibility we have to work for. You David do so much to foster conversations that open us to this possibility. Thankyou (and see you soon in Tuscany!)
