A sincere thank you for all of the comments contributed to this post. Pure Absence was written in the midst of lockdown when so many things that were so close and so taken for granted were now absent or at a distance. As many of us were lucky enough to experience, (though many due to their straightened circumstances were not) shedding this outer skin allowed a new complexion to emerge from within, and a new, quieter, more vulnerable breathability to begin: the natural world with its birdsong, its passing pale moons or its restless arrival on the seashore became a daily companion to many, helping us to realise what might have been 'absent' all along. This is so beautiful. “To begin every question in wonder.” This has me thinking that the truest “answer” to any question is the wonder it stirs within us, the often fleeting openness in that moment of not-knowing.
Took me so very long to learn this...lately, looking to meet the mystery. Examine the longing itself. Thanks for your insights, David, and thanks to John for his invisible hand in this poem.
What would the Radiant sound of a Red-Winged blackbird Be.....
Oh David, you help us see and resee, hear and rehear, To discover all that we covered with the numbing mud we packed around us since we opened our eyes of innocence that we came into this beautiful world with. I so needed to read this today as my mud was muffling my light.... Blessings to you and thank you for sharing your gift with us...

'What you seek,
is nowhere to be found
by answering
questions.
God’s full presence
felt
only in the absolute
essence
of absence' .
You so rock, David Whyte
This is beautiful
My life would be very different today had I not discovered you “yesterday”
You make me think, feel, laugh, cry
And sometimes, miracle of miracles, you even make me want to write
So thank you for sharing yourself
You make a difference
You’ve made a difference

Beautiful.
As always.
Thank you, David.
John O’Donohue was taken too early. His love of the Connemara prompted me to visit and revisit.

David,
Another Lovely poem! It reminds me of my Buddhist roots where to look for the self is only to find a no-self...Thank you for sharing...
